That Sound

I walked out in the park one day,
T'was getting dark you see,
And as I walk along the path,
I felt eyes watching me.

So, several times I stopped to look,
Yet nothing could be found,
Then on I'd go with quickened pace,
Until I heard that sound.

There was a noise of snapping twigs,
Somewhere behind the trees,
And then a sound that chilled my blood,
And weakened both my knees.

It was a sound I'd never heard,
Nor one I can define,
But I was sure I was the meal,
On which something would dine.

And then with labored breaths I took,
My feet began to run,
For I believed, that if I stayed,
My life would soon be done.

I ran and ran, till out of breathe,
And wished that I could scream,
But then I heard a voice cry out,
Wake up, you're in a dream.

And so I blinked and rubbed my eyes,
So glad that I awoke,
But fear still lingered in my mind,
So thick, I thought I'd choke.

And then the room's familiar sights,
Began to calm me down
But as I sat there on the bed,
Outside, I heard that sound.
