Some time ago, I lost a friend
Because we had to part,
And since that day a hole has grown
Within my aching heart.
I prayed to God that he would mend
This broken heart of mine,
And hoped that through the darkness he
Might send a light to shine.
I prayed that in that light there’d be
A new and loving friend,
Perhaps a very special one
Who’d help my heart to mend.
And with the passage of some time
And with persistent prayer,
I think the answer has come home,
And this I’d like to share.
I’ve met the shadow of my friend
I lost so long ago,
And though he’ll never be the same
He’ll mend my heart I know.
I knew my prayers were answered when
This shadow licked my face,
And took from me that loneliness
And only left a trace.
And so Shadow became his name,
This dog’s become that friend,
The special one that brought the light,
The blessing God would send.
And though the love that Hobo shared
Can never be replaced,
This Shadow may have love to fill
My empty hearted space.
